Follow These Steps to Determine if You Have a Leak

By following these steps, you can determine if you have a leak:

  • Make sure no one is using water anywhere in the home.
  • Look at the meter. If you see the red dial moving, then water is running somewhere within your home.
  • If it is moving, turn off the water to all your toilets one at a time. Check the meter after each one to see if the red dial stops moving. If it does, then the last toilet you turned off is leaking.
  • If the toilets are all turned off and the red dial keeps moving, do the same with your faucets and hose bibs.
  • Once you have located the leak and taken steps to repair it, check your meter at night before you go to bed. If it is higher in the morning, and no one has used water, then you still have a leak. This is the time to contact the professionals for help.

There are Several Potential Causes of High Water Bills

There are a number of reasons that your water bills may be so high. It may be that your have a leaking flapper on your toilet. The flapper, which is the large rubber plug at the bottom of your toilet tank, is likely the cause of any dripping sound you hear rom your toilet. To test if this is the issue, use a small amount of food coloring, put it in the tank, and wait half an hour without flushing. If the water in your toilet bowl is colored then you have a leak in your toilet tank.

If you have water in your tank leaking into the top of the overflow pipe, then the issue may be your ballcock valve. You can confirm if this is the issue by shaking pepper onto the walls of your toilet tank. If the powder ends up in the center, then the overflow is leaking. For plastic float arms, adjust the screw to get rid of the leak. You could also try sliding the clip or bending the arm so that the water level is two inches below the top of your overflow pipe.
