The Dangers of an Undetected Gas Leak

Although natural gas is one of the main sources of electricity to date, a gas leak can pose problems. According to PBS, natural gas delivered to homes contains approximately 85 to 90 percent methane, one of our environment’s biggest threats among all greenhouse gases due to its potency. Like other greenhouse gases, methane has the potential to contribute to global warming.

While at normal concentrations, methane can have little to no impact on human health, large amounts can diminish oxygen supply, induce suffocation, and potentially result in fatalities. Especially since gas leaks in a home or business setting often occur in tight, enclosed quarters, the dangers of such leaks can be harmful. What may start off as a headache, nausea, and eye and throat irritation can later turn into chest pain, asphyxia, disorientation, and possible death if the leak is not resolved.

Based on the latter information, it’s clear that detecting and repairing a busted gas leak line as soon as possible is critical. Trying to detect and repair the leak yourself is extremely dangerous and is not recommended.

Signs of a Gas Leak

Some common signs of a gas line leak include:

  • Smell of rotten eggs
  • Gas pipe damage
  • Whistling, hissing, or roaring sound coming from a gas line or appliance
  • A cloud of dirt or debris coming from a gas line or appliance
  • An exposed pipeline as a result of a natural disaster
  • Houseplants dying unexpectedly
  • Unexplained physical symptoms like a headache, difficulty breathing, ringing ears, vertigo, etc. that disappear when you leave the premises and come back when you return

Gas Line Leak Detection and Repair in Southern CA

At the first signs of a gas leak, opening up all windows and doors is important to help air out your home or building. Especially in cases of major gas leaks, it is important to flee the home or building as soon as possible and stay out until the issue is officially resolved.

Regardless of how serious a gas leak is, it’s vital to keep all pilot lights off; disable your gas meter if you can; and refrain from utilizing electrical devices, equipment, or vehicles as these can create a spark that may ignite into a fire or explosion. Additionally, do not light a match, candle, or other flame when you have suspicions that your home or building is experiencing a gas leak.

If anyone you know is experiencing moderate to severe symptoms from a gas leak, call 911 immediately before contacting your local South California plumber out to resolve the gas leak.
