Plumbing Repairs You Can Tackle Yourself and When to Call in the Professionals

While 1st Choice Plumbing, Flood & Restoration is standing by to help with plumbing needs 24 hours per day, there are some plumbing issues you can handle on your own. If you are reasonably handy and want to try to fix the issue yourself, consider these solutions – just know that if the repair is complicated at all, you could spend a lot less letting a professional plumber fix the problem quickly and correctly than trying to take it on yourself.

What to Do if Your Faucet is Slowly Dripping

A faucet that is constantly dripping is not just aggravating – it also wastes money. The most common culprit is a washer within the faucet that needs to be replaced. Turn off the water to the faucet, unscrew the handle, and inspect the O-ring and washer. If you notice there is damage then replace the parts and put it back together. If this does not fix the problem, or you do not see any damage to these parts, then it’s time to call 1st Choice Plumbing, Flood & Restoration.

What to Do if Your Toilet is Running

If you flush your toilet and water continues to flow into the bowl then there is likely an issue with the lever in the tank behind your toilet bowl. Take off the toilet tank lid, look for the chain that’s likely sunk down to the bottom of the tank, and reattach it to the lever. Replace the chain if necessary. If this does not fix the issue then it is time to call 1st Choice Plumbing, Flood & Restoration.

What to Do if You Have a Clogged Drain

The most important thing here is what not to do: Do not put a chemical drain cleaner down your drain. You can try natural solutions such as baking soda, hot water, salt, etc. However, if the clog is not easily cleared then you will need to call us for drain cleaning service.

What to Do if Your Shower Head Trickles

If your shower head sprays water in all directions, or the water otherwise seems blocked in certain parts, then it may be as simple as cleaning off the shower head and spray plate. Lime scale buildup can often be the culprit in this situation. Just take off the shower head and spray late, soak them in a solution for descaling, and put it back on. If this does not fix the issue then it is likely time to replace your showerhead.

What to Do if Your Garbage Disposal is Not Working Correctly

You can try some basic repairs on your own, such as resetting the garbage disposal by using the button on the bottom of it, or using an Allen key to manually turn the disposal in order to dislodge the clog. If neither of these steps fix the issue then it is time to call 1st Choice Plumbing, Flood & Restoration at 866-437-0205.
