Plumbing Myths Debunked

We all walk around with certain ideas about how things work, and we believe our ideas are true. Maybe we grew up seeing our parents doing certain things around the house and just assumed that was how a specific task got done. Below are some plumbing myths, debunked! Some of these might even surprise you!

A Brick in the Tank of the Toilet Will Save Money

Some sources say that putting a brick in your toilet tank can save water. But in reality, doing that can actually keep your toilet from flushing properly. If you need your toilet to perform better and more efficiently, you might want to look into replacing it or seeing if it could be repaired.

‘Flushable’ Wipes

Flushable wipes are one of the main sources for clogged toilets and pipes. They actually don’t break down in the same way toilet paper does. Also, you should avoid liquid drain cleaners. Liquid drain cleaners can be news as they eat away at the pipes. Try to use a plunger or an auger.

A Water Heater Will Explode If You Hear it Rumbling

Although we can’t say for certain, it’s not likely your water heater will explode. Probably, it just needs a good cleaning. Rumbling and gurgling sounds are generally caused by a build up in sediment. Steam bubbles rising through the sediment then cause the sound you hear. Deciding to not fix the issue could lead to the failure of your water heater before its time.

Where to Find Your Ring

There’s no need to panic if your ring goes down the sink – there’s actually a quick way to get it back. Grab a bucket and put it below the P-trap and remove the clean-out. This could save you from having to call a plumber. And if it isn’t in there, then you might have to call a plumber to fish it out.

In-Tank Cleaners Aren’t Harmful

Some in-tank cleaners can cause more harm than good. Over time, they cause the pipes and other internal parts to wear out. There are some at home DIY cleaners you can make, or purchase a non-toxic cleaner and use it as needed.

Using a Plunger to Clear a Sink Clog

Did you know that you can use a plunger to clear a sink clog? But – not if you’ve used a drain cleaner in the sink. The chemicals of a drain cleaner can cause harmful burns as they’re pushed back up through the sink by the plunger.
