Jammed Garbage Disposal Repair in San Marcos

Unless it’s a piece of toast, anything jammed is never good. In the case of a jammed garbage disposal, you bet that you have a problem on hand that needs to be resolved.

That precious piece of equipment that used to help grind up chunks of food in your drain small enough to safely pass through the piping of your plumbing system seems to no longer work. Chances are, that’s definitely a garbage disposal jam.

How Do You Know if Your Garbage Disposal is Jammed?

Is your garbage disposal jammed, or is it just going out? If you’re experiencing a jam, you might notice some of the following:

  • Odor of rotting food coming from your garbage disposal
  • Wastes staying put even after turning your garbage disposal on
  • Noise coming from your unit, yet nothing being grinded up

If your garbage disposal is going out, you may experience the latter signs as well. However, you may also notice water leaks, frequent clogs even when putting small amounts of food in your drain, and/or lack of power. Your garbage disposal may begin to grind food at a slower-than-usual pace.

What to Do Before Calling a Plumber

Before assuming that your garbage disposal needs work from a professional plumber, it’s important to do two things:

  1. Test your power outlet.

The power outlet your garbage disposal is hooked up to is more than likely in the cabinet underneath your sink. To test whether or not your garbage disposal problem is actually a power outlet issue, simply unplug your garbage disposal, and plug in another appliance in the same power outlet. Test the appliance you just plugged in. If it works, it’s not your power; you’ve got a garbage disposal problem.

  1. Reset your garbage disposal unit.

Sometimes all appliances need is a reset. Garbage disposals may need a reset every now and then too, that is, if it gets overheated. Ensure your garbage disposal is in the “off” position before giving it a few minutes to cool down. Then, open the cabinet just below your sink. Look for a cylinder-shaped device (which holds your disposal). Somewhere on the bottom of the device, there should be a red button. If it’s pushed out, which typically indicates that your disposal did in fact get overheated, press it in.

If your garbage disposal works like normal after being reset, you didn’t have a jam after all. However, if you hear humming, a jam may be present.

If these tests fail, it’s a good time to get our team to come out and tend to your garbage disposal jam or other issue.
