Easy Ways to Reduce Your Water Usage

Modern day plumbing does more than allow you to take hot showers and easily wash all your dishes with the touch of a button. Plumbing has a much greater importance, and it’s based on allowing us to stay healthy. In fact, many of the amenities you have in your home and use as second nature are not available many places worldwide. Without basic plumbing systems, a community’s overall health and environment can be at risk.

The World Plumbing Council shares some worldwide stats with us:

• 3 in 10 people worldwide lack access to safe, readily available water in their home

• 6 in 10 people do not have toilets in their home

• 361,000 children under the age of 5 die each year due to waterborne illness because of water contamination.

With modern day plumbing making our lives so easy, we might not be aware of how much water we are using, and potentially wasting. There are a few easy ways to reduce your water usage without having to make any major changes.

Save Water in the Shower

According to EPA calculations, the average person takes an 8 minute shower, which means that we use 20 gallons each time we take a shower. If you cut down on your shower time by three or more minutes, you will reduce how much water you use.

Some more facts that might make your jaw drop!

  • Letting your faucet run hot water for 5 minutes uses almost as much energy as a 60-watt bulb uses for 22 hours
  • If you shower with a bucket on the shower floor you can capture up to a gallon of wasted water. You can use that bucket of water for your flowers or plants

Save Water in your Toilet

It’s not uncommon for internal leaks from your toilet tank or bowl to go undetected. A leak can waste up to 100 gallons a day. To find a leak you might not be able to see, listen for dripping or hissing noises or take the dye test to see if your toilet has an internal leak.

Save Water with Your Home Appliances

Many new appliances such as dishwashers and laundry machines have been updated to help save water and improve their use for you. Energy-Star rated products are the best for saving both energy and water, so if you have an older our outdated appliance, upgrading could mean seeing a new efficiency with how you use it.
