5 Simple Ways to Reduce Your Water Usage

There are a number of reasons you may want to reduce how much water you use in your home, whether for environmental reasons, to lower your utility bills, or both. At 1st Choice Plumbing, Flood & Restoration we can help with several of the following five ideas that can help you reduce your water usage. Just call us at 866-437-0205 to set up an appointment.

  1. Go to the Car Wash
  2. This may sound counterintuitive but know that an average garden hose uses ten gallons of water per minute. If you take ten minutes to wash your car, you could be using 100 gallons of water. If you instead go to the car wash, you will be using a power washer that uses about half that amount of water per minute. Note as well that a professional car wash is regulated and has to meet requirements for water usage and water conservation.

  3. Use the Dishwasher
  4. On average, each household in the United States does about 215 loads of dishes each year. Hand washing uses an average of 27 gallons of water to clean what one dishwasher load can clean. If the dishwasher is Energy Star rated then it will use five gallons per load or less.

  5. Look for Leaks
  6. In many homes, the main way water is wasted has nothing to do with household usage – it’s all about leaks. According to a study from the EPA, about one trillion gallons of water are wasted each year due to water leaks, and simply correcting a worn toilet, dripping faucet, or other valve that is leaking can reduce a water bill by as much as 10%.

  7. Use a Water-Saving Shower Head
  8. On average, a standard shower head uses about 2.5 gallons per minute. Even if you take short showers, that’s a lot – and those who take long, luxurious showers may be using hundreds of gallons each week. Just by installing a WaterSense approved shower head, you could save a lot of water – and a lot of money.

  9. Have Your Hot Water Heater Serviced
  10. Everyone loves a hot shower but you can be wasting gallons of water just waiting for the water to heat to the right temperature. If you turn on your faucet, stand there and wait for the water to get hot, then you are wasting water. Call 1st Choice Plumbing, Flood & Restoration to have your hot water heater serviced.
