6 Tools for all DIY Plumbing Needs

Hiring a reputable plumbing company is always recommended over trying to fix an issue by yourself, but some easier tasks can be done with the right tools. Being prepared with the right tool box means keeping an emergency situation from getting worse or even fixing an easy clog yourself. Below we have 6 tools that all homes should have, whether you love the DIY projects or always call an expert.

Pipe Wrench

Since you would usually use one wrench to keep your work stable and the other wrench to focus on turning, having two is recommend. A pipe wrench is a must-have tool for any task that needs loosening or tightening. Keeping a few rags in in your tool bag along with wrenches is also recommended, since you can wrap pipes or fixtures and prevent scratches and dents.

Basin Wrench

If plumbing tools are not something you’re familiar with, then the basin wrench might not be a tool you easily recognize. The basin wrench has a spring-loaded jaw that is designed to grip and turn bolts, which is not like a standard wrench head. This is the best tool for tasks where you need to loosen areas under your sink.

Tongue and Groove Pliers

We also recommend have a solid pair of pliers to help hold things in place. Tongue and groove pliers are designed with a slip-joint so that the jaws can open wide and hold onto pipes of (almost) any size. Many pliers are created with a long handle, which makes them easy to use when tightening and loosening. We also suggest wrapping things with a rag first since pliers can have serrated edges and cause scratches.

Plumber’s Putty

Plumber’s putty is sometimes known as jointing compound as well. It’s used when a watertight seal is needed. Plumber’s putty can help stop small leaks until you are able to get a professional to come and fix the issue.

Plumber’s Tape

Plumber’s tape is also called teflon tape or thread seal tape. It’s commonly used to keep fix a leaky threaded joint. For example, we see this being used a lot on a shower head pipe. By wrapping some tape around dry threads, it helps create a watertight seal.

Plunger

Plungers are a great tool for helping stop overflowing toilets and unclogging drains. In fact, a plunger is a tool you may use the most when fixing small plumbing issues around the house. There is such a thing as correct plunger techniques, so make sure you’re using it correctly to get the best results.

You might already have some of these at home, which is a great start. You might always depend on professionals to get the job done for you, which isn’t a bad way to go, but having these tools handy can help prevent an emergency.
